Learn English Online

Post-Covid 19, learning has transformed into digital mode. It has many advantages compared to a limited student, language classroom setting. You could be the next student of my academy sitting with another student from a different country with an altogether different culture and background. Interaction is real-time and learning is at your own convenience and pace. This helps open the horizon of a broad mindset while you keep progressing and achieving new feats on your language learning journey.

Why is learning English so important?

English is the number 1 language to conduct business. Business means revenue, which in turn, means positive growth for the economy.

It is rightly believed that English is the language of International Communication. English is the official language of 53 countries while 400 million people speak English as their first language. The countries which don’t have English as their first language have adopted it as their second language of Business communication. India is one such country with a population of 1.35 Billion people.

Almost all scientific journals, thesis, findings are either written in English or translated into English for the approval of a global audience. It is the language of computers, diplomatic relationships, business, commerce, and of course with the advent of Social Media, learning English is even more important than ever.

In order to qualify for a reputable job, to travel across the world, to meet new and interesting people, to prospect clients, an error-free, grammatically correct pronunciation of English words is an absolute necessity in today’s global village scenario.

The above is just like the tip of an iceberg when it comes to emphasize the importance of the English language.

Which exam is the global benchmark to assess your English Language Proficiency?

TOEFL:  Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the major testing systems of English proficiency that measures the candidate’s mastery over the English language. TOEFL scores are usually demanded by Universities as a part of the admission procedure.

Although there are numerous other Internationally recognized tests and examination formats to assess your English language proficiency, the one that is most popular, reliable, and accepted world-wide is the IELTS (International English language Testing System), conducted by the British Council.

Advantages of IELTS exams:

IELTS is a worldwide recognized testing system, of the English language proficiency for non-native English speakers. IELTS is the result of a collaboration between the British Council, Cambridge English language Assessment, and IDP Education, Australia. If a person is either trying to seek admission to a university or college in an English speaking nation or if someone wants to work in an English speaking country or immigrate to a country like the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc. an IELTS report with a sufficiently reasonable band score is highly desirable. For any non-native English-speaking citizen an IELTS test report is no less than a passport to travel and explore the world.

The Test has four formats, viz, Listening Skills, Reading Skills, Writing Skills, and your Speaking Skill.

A candidate needs to take all the four formats of the test one after the another and based on the scores of each and every format, an overall score is awarded on a scale of zero to nine. Zero being the lowest and band nine is the highest score.

A detailed description of the band calculation of IELTS is given here for your ready reference.

Comparing IELTS with TOEFL

For UK immigration an IELTS test score is mandatory. However, for Canada and the US either IELTS or TOEFL is acceptable.

Both IELTS and TOEFL comprise four sections to evaluate the most critical aspects of language proficiency. The four sections include Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. The TOEFL, however, is entirely a multiple-choice test format while the IELTS is a mix and match of short answers and essay questions. One can appear for the TOEFL for the paper-based or computer-based test format as desired. The internet-based TOEFL exam can take up to four hours to complete, while the IELTS takes two hours and forty-five minutes for completion. However, IELTS can take more than one day, as the speaking test is usually scheduled for a different date with an examiner.

A few quick methods to improve your English Language skills:

Learning a language needs persistence and constant endeavors. However, the following tips could help you improve your language skills dramatically and help excel in your growth.

Making Reading a habit: In order to learn and develop your English skills the easiest and quickest way is to read whatever you come across. From textbooks to journals to newspapers, to emails and blogs and articles, comics whatever content is available in English in front of you, you should read it.

Use a physical/ paperback dictionary: make the effort to go old school and develop the habit of searching words in a physical dictionary instead of looking for the meaning of an unfamiliar word in google. This habit of using the physical dictionary helps your brain’s cognitive ability and you are likely to retain the meaning of the newfound word for a longer duration than googling it.

Take Notes: Taking notes and writing them down in a journal or diary again helps the cognitive capacity of your brain and makes you to retain the new information for a longer duration.

Watch movies/ podcasts or YouTube videos in English: This will help you to listen to the correct pronunciations and the diction that a native user uses to say the words.

Speak with yourself or with your friends:  This is a time-tested and proven method to improve your language skills. Stand in front of a mirror and speak to yourself or read a newspaper aloud. Hear your own voice and evaluate yourself if you are improving every day. Make it a point to speak in English with your friends. This will boost your confidence as well as fluency of the language. One has to shed the skin of fear or shyness if one has to learn a new language or any skill.

Write: If you can make it a habit of writing at least 20 sentences every day, it is bound to improve your writing skills. It will also automatically help you grow your vocabulary.
